Success Story: Duckery – Promising livelihood option for all

Mr. Haradhan Mahato hails from an agricultural family, a resident of Kuwarda village of Bana Panchayat of Rajnagar Block of Sariakela-Kharsawa District. He spent most of his time since childhood in the agricultural field growing crops and vegetables. Apart from agriculture, Haradhan also keeps chickens but only for meeting their consumption need. The family owns only two acres of cultivated land on which paddy is cultivated as the major crop. On a small piece of land, the family cultivates vegetables to meet household consumption. The family’s major source of livelihood is agriculture. For cash, Haradhan had to work as daily wage labourer.

In the month of July, 2022 he participated in a training programme organized by CWS with kind support of HDFC Bank CSR. During training he understood the importance of diversified source of livelihood and potential in duck farming. Under the Holistic Rural Development Project Haradhan was supported with 20 ducklings (13 White Pekin – for meat purpose and 07 Khaki Campbell- Egg purpose) along with fingerlings and banana saplings.

Since he was imparted proper knowledge on proper feeding, housing and health care, the duck (White Pekin) matured quickly that paved a way for generating income for Haradhan.  In month of September, 2022 he sold out his all 13 duck (White Pekin) at the rate of Rs. 600/ piece and earned Rs. 7800. He fetched premium price for his duke because of festive season and the appearance & weight of duck. From his earned amount, he spent Rs. 2000 on his paddy cultivation and rest Rs. 5800 was spent on re-purchase of batch of 40 ducklings of White Pekin variety with view of selling the batch during upcoming festive season in December, 2022.

Now, Haradhan is very much confident in Duck farming, says “ es baar jo paisa kamaingey ussey aur jyda batakh ka baccha kharidengey kyonki batakh main bahut fayda hai and 3 mahina ke andar paisa tin gunaa ho jata hai. Hum log jaisey chotey kissan ke liye bahut accha business hai. Aab meri patni bhi dekhbhall kar lety hi aur hum bhi apna kaam kar letey hai”.

Haradhan is very happy with his new venture and thanking HDFC Bank CSR, CWS and Village Development Committee ( VDC) for extending support.
