Short Description of the Project:

A three years project on livelihood promotion in flood prone districts of Bihar is being implemented from April 2011 to March 2014 by six grass-root non-governmental organizations namely Nav Jagriti, Gramayasheel, Gram Bharti Vikas Sangh, Welfare India, Bihar Gram Vikas Parishad and Abhigyan Disha in five different district and intensive works on agriculture and livelihood promotion is being taken up in the 53 targeted villages. This is an extension of SDTT project started in 2007 with five partners in four districts. The organisation Bihar Gram Vikas Parishad has been included as new partner in new phase and implementing its activities in Sitamarhi district. Centre for World Solidarity –Bihar is providing socio-technical support to the partner NGOs to make these interventions successful in the area.

CWS plays a role of facilitator towards project planning, monitoring and implementation of the project interventions in entire targeted area of the project. CWS also make considerable an enough advocacy efforts for advocacy at the policy level on flood mitigation & alternative solutions.

Goal

Improving quality of life of the landless, small & marginal farmers in flood prone villages of five districts of Bihar by 2014 through ensuring livelihood interventions of farm & non-farm activities.

Purpose

Enhancement of socio-economic status of targeted community through land, agriculture and other livelihood interventions carried forward by sustainable community level institutions.

Objectives:

» Targeted community is organized with focus on pro-poor families, single women, landless families, small farmers & marginal farmers; those are involved directly in the program interventions.

» Reclaim of water logged area into cultivable farm by construction of water drainage system and other feasible irrigation system in the villages

» Capacitated targeted families practice System of Rice Intensification and / or System of Wheat Intensification

» Enhanced income of farmers through wide-spread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices using locally available inputs

» Enhanced incomes of poor families through diversification of livelihood options

Achievements:

» 41 women SHGs has been formed & strengthened.

» 21 farmers club has also been formed including 382 farmers.

» 123 members of women SHGs have participated in the training programme

» The formation of user’s group is in the process.

» The formation of Village Core Committees in 53 villages is under process.

» Around 752 number of horticulture plants have been distributed among 376 farmers.

» 323 numbers of farmers till now have been linked to developed nutritional garden.

» Awareness about nutritional food intake during the pregnancy & lactation and childhood age is being generated in all 53 covered villages.

» 155 farmers got capacitated on SRI/SWI

» 67 farmers in Supaul have adopted organic SRI/ SWI

» 155 farmers has been capacitated on sustainable agriculture, SRI / SWI, non-chemical agriculture

» 67 farmers have received seeds/ sapling for paddy cultivation

» 422 farmers have participated in vermin compost capacity building programme.

» 23 vermin compost pits has been constructed covering 20 villages.

» One convergence meeting has been organized by Gramyasheel.

» 20 participants from the Government side & other local NGO along with 30 representatives from targeted community participated in the meeting.

» 5 farmers have received the seeds for green manure.$

Livelihood
